Outpatient surgery in adolescents, next day phone call and follow up – reality of a tertiary hospital Vanessa Costa Silva, Catarina Barbosa Carvalho, María Fátima Carvalho, João Moreira Pinto Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Porto, Portugal INTRODUCCIÓN Y OBJETIVOS Characterize surgical ambulatory procedures in ado- lescents and evaluate its feasibility and early post- surgical recovery. MÉTODOS Retrospective, single-center review of all ambulato- ry surgical procedures in adolescents between july 2018 and december 2019. Surgical and clinical data were reviewed from the electronic hospital registry. A standardized phone inquiry was filled by our nursing team in the day after surgery. RESULTADOS Over the 18-months period, 375 outpatient surger- ies were performed. Median age was 15 and 69,9% of patients were male. The eligibility for outpatient surgery included: home-hospital distance shorter than 50Km, lack of major co-mobilities and pre- dictable surgical length less than 60 minutes. The main procedures performed were: sacrococcygeal cyst (n =103, mean time of surgery 20,9 minutes); onychocryptosis (n =47, mean time of surgery 17,6 minutes); fimosis (n =34, mean time of surgery 23,1 minutes) and melanocytic nevus (n =21, mean time of surgery 14,9 minutes). 57,2% of caregivers an- swered the inquiry. Pain was controlled in all but 4 patients and only 3 of those were admitted to the emergency service. Minor bleeding was the most frequent comorbidity after surgery (reported in 4,2% of patients). 56,3% of patients reported nor- mal activity at home the following day and only 7,9% reported a major limitation. Parents reported a good level of information about the procedure. 92,3% had a follow-up appointment; 9,2% of which had wound related complications and 0,3% had re- lapse. CONCLUSIONES Ambulatory procedures can be safely performed in selected patients. A phone inquiry the following day is a good method to evaluate postoperative health status of patients and to reassure both caregivers and surgeons.
